This limited-edition, pigment print depicts the 1974 BMW 3.0 CSL, Alexander Calder Art Car.
BMW has made a splash over the years by commissioning artists to design the livery for its race cars. The tradition began with the car depicted here, a 1974 BMW 3.0 CSL.
The car was born when a French privateer and gallery owner approached BMW to ask if they might have a 3.0 CSL to race at Le Mans in 1975. After the deal was struck he asked if his friend, the artist Alexander Calder, could paint the car. BMW said something to the effect of, “Why not?” and the first BMW art car was born.
The 3.0 CSL was a lightweight, homologated version of BMW’s already formidable 3.0 CS. The final homologation version received an aero package including a large air dam, short fins along the front fenders, a spoiler near the trailing edge of the roof, and a tall rear wing. Of the 1,265 CSLs produced only 167 received this aero package. Of those, only one became the Calder art car.
