This archival, limited-edition, fine-art pigment print depicts the 1942 Willys Jeep in Navy livery.

The Jeep started life as a rush project for the war effort. It was designed in a mere few days by the American Bantam company. The government liked the protoype but assessed that Bantam didn't have the production capacity to produce the vehicle at the capacity that the War Department needed, so Ford and Willys were asked to submit prototypes as well. Eventually Willys and Ford produced the bulk of Jeeps for the war.

After the war the rugged, versatile, reliable Jeep went on to kick start a whole new automotive market: the civilian off-roader. It was sold for farming, ranching, industrial, and recreational uses.

The early Jeeps were hugely successful. Production numbers for the military and first civilian models of the Jeep total over 850,000. The early Jeep is a true icon having, within less than decade, birthed an entirely new class of vehicle.
